Guglielmo Vicario wants Tottenham exit after supporter controversy

Guglielmo Vicario is reportedly thinking about leaving Tottenham due to the negativity surrounding him.

Vicario was booed by Tottenham fans vs Fulham after his huge error contributed to the 2-1 home defeat last Saturday.

The Italian fired a poor clearance straight to an opposition player when a long way out of his goal on the left, allowing Harry Wilson to curl a long-range shot into an empty net in the sixth minute to put the visitors 2-0 up.

Spurs supporters’ reactions then led to Pedro Porro‘s angry reaction at full-time and social media comments about treatment of his teammates, as well as controversy around manager Thomas Frank after he said booing during the match came from “not true fans” of Tottenham.

Vicario eyes Tottenham exit after Fulham boos

According to an update from Gazetta dello Sport in his native Italy the Tottenham keeper is now considering an exit.

He is said to be thinking that it i time to leave the Premier League given the negative situation around him.

Frank, for his part, is not said to have any intention of replacing the 29-year-old as the starter.

A separate Gazetta story goes further in suggesting Vicario has already made his decision to aim for a Serie A return, and wants to move to Inter.

However, the former Empoli man has three years remaining on his Spurs deal, said to be worth £2.5 million a year, and is considered to be too expensive for the Italian giants at around £30m.

At the same time, former Juventus figure Fabio Paratici is officially back in charge of the sporting department at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and not a “friend” of the Nerazzurri.

Vicario exit inevitable

If Vicario is thinking of moving on then it probably only speeds up a process that would have been partially in motion on the club’s side as well.

He was, publicly at least, one of the Spurs figures who seemed to take the vitriol in the Fulham loss on the chin the best.

But, despite his obvious qualities, Tottenham probably need to upgrade if they are to reach their long-term objectives of regularly challenging for trophies.

Since his arrival in 2023 it has been identified by rivals that swinging balls in high towards him in a crowded penalty area is a potential weakness, and for all his shot-stopping ability he has been targeted in this way.

January seems a very destabilising time to lose a starting keeper, although should Frank not last until then everything would be up in the air, but it would be no shock to see Vicario move on in the summer.
