Daniel Levy green-lights Postecoglou to seal £20m Tottenham transfer in January
Tottenham are preparing a £20 million January bid for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, the Sunday Mirror reports.
According to the news outlet’s print edition [22 December, pg69], Daniel Levy has given Ange Postecoglou the green light to expand his search for a back-up goalkeeper to the Championship.
The 22-year-old has emerged as a genuine transfer target for Spurs [talkSPORT] with Postecoglou desperate to recruit a new shot-stopper with regular starter Guglielmo Vicario set for a considerable spell on the sidelines.
Tottenham want to sign Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford
After his impressive displays in the Europa League, Postecoglou appeared content with Fraser Forster between the sticks in North London, but the mood has shifted entirely.
The 36-year-old single-handedly gifted Manchester United two goals in the Carabao Cup on Thursday [19 December], and while Spurs marched on as victors of the 4-3 thriller, Forster’s inability to play out from the back set off alarm bells at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
As is widely known, Postecoglou is unwilling to sacrifice his brand of football no matter the circumstances, and he is now keen to recruit a goalkeeper who is as capable with the ball at his feet as he is with the ball heading towards the goal.
And Trafford is as good a deputy as any to hold the mantle in Vicario’s absence – despite suffering relegation with Burnley last term, he has a year’s worth of Premier League experience under his belt.

The Englishman is called upon regularly for the national side while plying his trade in the second-tier and, at 22, has the potential to grow into a top-class goalkeeper in North London and give Postecoglou the depth between the sticks that Arne Slot enjoys at Liverpool.
Postecoglou will struggle to find a better option at the price set in the January transfer window, and the Australian cannot afford to squander the perfect opportunity to future-proof the goalkeeper position and provide worthy competition to Vicario.
