Cristian Romero has Lionel Scaloni on alert as ‘completely new scenario’ possible for Tottenham star
Cristian Romero’s potential move from Tottenham to Real Madrid could open up a “completely new scenario”.
That is according to El Intransigente, which states that Madrid are considering a £87million offer for the Tottenham defender.
Romero has been repeatedly linked with a Tottenham Hotspur Stadium exit, with the Argentina international becoming increasingly more outspoken against the club’s owners.
In December, the 27-year-old criticised the board for a lack of investment, saying: “Manchester City competes every year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea strengthens their squad, doesn’t do well, strengthens again, and now they’re seeing results.
“Those are the things to imitate. You have to realise that something is going wrong, hopefully, they [the board] realise it.”
Weeks after accusing the club’s hierarchy of telling “lies”, speculation is mounting that Romero – who appears to have a discipline problem after picking up a reckless red card at Manchester United – could be heading for Los Blancos this summer.

Cristian Romero has chance to become ‘undisputed pillar’ at Real Madrid
The report adds that Madrid’s interest could open up a “completely new scenario” for Romero, both sporting-wise and symbolically.
They say that if Romero moved to one of the biggest teams in the world, that would place it in another “international dimension”.
The Argentine publication adds that it could also have a big impact on Argentina’s national side ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Romero is already a regular at Tottenham, but if he moved to Madrid, that would make him an “undisputed pillar of the [national] team”.
If Romero did leave Tottenham for Madrid, Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni would likely build his defence around the centre-back.

Romero has also been linked with La Liga side Atletico Madrid but, for the time being, he remains as Tottenham’s captain.
The fact that they are in a relegation battle, though, may lead Romero to leave the club this summer. But as previously mentioned, he will not go on the cheap, with his deal running until 2029.
When will Romero return for Tottenham’s relegation fight?
In Tottenham’s 2-0 loss at United on 7 February, Romero picked up a straight red card for a reckless foul on Casemiro.
As that was his second dismissal of the season, his three-match ban was upgraded to four as Tottenham’s woes continued.
As a result, he missed Tottenham’s defeat to Newcastle, which cost Thomas Frank his job, as well as Spurs’ 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal in Igor Tudor‘s first match in charge.
Tottenham’s last win was back on 28 December away to Crystal Palace. So even with Romero in the team, their fortunes have not been good.
| Tottenham’s winless Premier League run | Date |
| Tottenham 1-4 Arsenal (Igor Tudor’s first game in charge) | 22 February |
| Tottenham 1-2 Newcastle (Thomas Frank then sacked) | 10 February |
| Man Utd 2-0 Tottenham | 7 February |
| Tottenham 2-2 Man City | 1 February |
| Burnley 2-2 Tottenham | 24 January |
| Tottenham 1-2 West Ham | 17 January |
| Bournemouth 3-2 Tottenham | 7 January |
| Tottenham 1-1 Sunderland | 4 January |
| Brentford 0-0 Tottenham | 1 January |
Romero is still banned for Sunday’s trip to Fulham and then their next home clash against Crystal Palace on 5 March.
He could mark his return to action in the Premier League away to Liverpool on 15 March as 16th-placed Tottenham try to distance their four-point gap to the relegation zone.
Romero helped Spurs win the Europa League last season. Now, he is tasked with keeping Tottenham in the Premier League, while trying not to pick up another suspension.
