Cristian Romero hands Tottenham with stunning exit ultimatum, he’s ready to quit over one person at the club
Cristian Romero could leave Tottenham in the summer transfer window.
Spurs lost 11 Premier League home games in 2025, and the general feeling towards both Thomas Frank and the players is at an all-time low.
Romero called out the Spurs board in a stunning rant on Instagram after losing 3-2 to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium in midweek, and Frank’s future remains in doubt as they sit 14th in the table.
Romero’s excellent performance against Newcastle on 2 December has been the highlight of an otherwise disappointing campaign.
The Argentina international has been hot-headed both on and off the pitch this season, and Spurs’ captain could be set to leave if the club don’t invest in new players.
Cristian Romero will ask to leave Tottenham if they don’t improve their recruitment
Reports emerged that Romero has been given preferential treatment at Tottenham under Frank.
In addition to that, Spanish media outlet Fichajes has now revealed that the Argentine will ask to leave Spurs in the next summer transfer window if Frank is sacked.
The 27-year-old defender is demanding significant financial investment to strengthen the squad in order for Tottenham to challenge for the Premier League title.
Atletico Madrid were interested in Romero over the past summer, and they are still monitoring his situation.
Diego Simeone is a huge fan of his compatriot and believes he has all the qualities he needs in a centre-back.
One quality that hasn’t been seen from Romero is his leadership, and Frank must replace his captain with immediate effect.
Tottenham need a new captain if they want to progress under Thomas Frank
Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro were among the players to confront the Tottenham fans in the away loss to Bournemouth on Wednesday, and a proper captain would have squashed the issue immediately.
Instead, it was Guglielmo Vicario who had to step in, and Romero was nowhere to be seen.
After posting the cryptic message on social media in an attempt to spark speculation around his future, Frank is left with just one choice.
| Appearances | 270 |
| Yellow cards | 85 |
| Red Cards | 8 |
His authority will continue to be undermined if he doesn’t select someone else to be the captain.
Romero’s disciplinary record is shocking, and a cooler head is needed; otherwise Spurs will never improve.
The likes of Rodrigo Bentancur, Van de Ven, or even Joao Palhinha would be better options at this point, and it’s up to Frank to take control of the dressing room.
