Cristian Romero final approval given as most likely Tottenham exit destination emerges

Tottenham have been a complete shambles under Thomas Frank this season.

Saturday’s third-round FA Cup exit to Aston Villa at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has left supporters furious, and calls have been made for the Dane to be sacked following the 2-1 defeat.

Cristian Romero called out the Tottenham board in a stunning rant on Instagram after the 3-2 loss to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Wednesday, accusing them of a lack of ambition.

Romero has also expressed his desire to leave Tottenham, and the captain will push to leave N17 if things don’t improve quickly.

Interest in the centre-back is starting to gain momentum, and Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has made it clear that the 27-year-old would be a good fit for his side.

Xabi Alonso pushes for Real Madrid to sign Cristian Romero

The Argentina defender has been a liability for Tottenham at times, with his poor disciplinary record costing them in big games over the last few seasons.

Romero was sent off in the 2-1 loss to Liverpool on 20 December, and has since been fined £50,000 for failing to leave the pitch in an orderly fashion after being shown the red card.

However, his talent is undeniable, and according to Spanish media outlet Fichajes, Real Madrid are reportedly prepared to offer around £69.4million (€80m) to sign the 27-year-old.

Alonso has given his final approval to the transfer, it is reported, after analysing the defender’s qualities at the back.

The Spanish outfit’s sporting plans for next season prioritise rebuilding their defence, and Romero would help rejuvenate their ageing backline.

Reports emerged after the Bournemouth result that Romero has been given preferential treatment at Tottenham under Frank, and it’s safe to say that he has a lot of influence in the dressing room.

Romero’s departure won’t be a sore loss for Tottenham fans

If Romero were to leave in January or even the summer, he wouldn’t missed too much.

His hot-headed personality has transmitted itself to his teammates at times, and he has proven himself to be an ineffective captain.

Although being linked with Real Madrid shows his individual quality, he certainly hasn’t got the temperament to lead one of the biggest sides in the Premier League.

With Spurs in free fall under Frank, it would be best to take the extortionate fee for the Argentine and reinvest in other areas of the squad.

Luka Vuskovic is thriving on loan at Hamburg, and he looks to be ready to play in the Premier League.

Tottenham already have a replacement for Romero in their ranks, and given how this season has played out, fans may just want a complete reset.

Selling Romero could be the first step of a much-needed rebuild.
