Aston Villa get goalkeeper lifeline as Guglielmo Vicario realises Tottenham transfer error
Guglielmo Vicario won’t be a Tottenham player for much longer.
Thomas Frank wants another goalkeeper at Tottenham after the 29-year-old’s repeated mistakes this season, although it looks as if he may have to wait until the end of the season.
Vicario joined Spurs from Empoli in 2023, and after a promising first campaign under Ange Postecoglou, his form has plummeted.
Vicario’s future at Tottenham is in doubt, and a potential summer move for the Italian could leave Aston Villa fans delighted that their goalkeeper Emi Martinez may stay put.

Inter want to sign Guglielmo Vicario over Emi Martinez in the summer
The Italian giants will be called upon to replace goalkeeper Yann Sommer, whose contract expires on 30 June.
After recent performances, a move back to Italy might be the best thing for Vicario‘s career.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport’s print edition, he remains Inter’s top target ahead of the summer.
Despite opening talks with Aston Villa’s Martinez, Cristian Chivu’s men don’t see the 33-year-old as their priority.
| Martinez | Stat | Vicario |
| 18 | Appearances | 22 |
| 4 | Clean sheets | 7 |
| 17 | Goals conceded | 29 |
| 75.0% | Save percentage | 66.3% |
Instead, they’re eager to land the Tottenham man, who could leave England after nearly three years to return to his homeland.
Vicario was brilliant during his stint at Empoli, but he refused to join Inter in 2023, instead prioritising a move to North London.
However, it is reported that he now realises it was a mistake after a dreadful start to the season, and he could favour a transfer to San Siro.
It’s quite alarming to see Vicario regrets his move to N17, although Spurs surely won’t mind that much if a replacement can be found.
Inter will make a grave error if they choose Vicario over Martinez
Vicario’s awful performances for Spurs have left fans booing him at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
On the other hand, Martinez won the Yashin Trophy in 2023 and 2024 and has been fantastic for Villa over the last five seasons.
The Argentine is miles clear of Vicario in terms of ability, and apart from being older, there is no logical reason as to why Chivu would opt to sign the Spurs goalkeeper over Martinez.
For Aston Villa, they’ll be thrilled at the possibility of keeping their shot-stopper, while Spurs will be delighted that Vicario looks set to leave in June.
However, it is a truly baffling decision from the Italian giants.
