Tottenham’s training ground: Where is it, what’s it called and the history of Hotspur Way

Tottenham’s state-of-the-art training facilities have helped them stand out from rival Premier League clubs.

The construction of Hotspur Way was one way the Lewis family prioritised Tottenham’s sporting success.

It has since become somewhere that has housed Tottenham legends such as Son Heung-min

But has also been a reason why the Lewis family have struggled to move some Spurs players on, as Tottenham News provides a full rundown of the training facility and its uses.

The transition from Spurs Lodge

Before Hotspur Way came Spurs Lodge, where Tottenham trained for 16 years.

It comes as no surprise that Spurs Lodge was not the Lilywhites’ first home, with it not initially built to house a top-flight team.

The physical demands of football had grown exponentially since Tottenham moved there in 1996, with greater emphasis on rehab, diet and nutrition.

No longer fit for purpose, the North London club decided to construct and move to Hotspur Way in 2012, as the Lilywhites continued their strive towards success.

Hotspur Way

The construction of Tottenham’s state-of-the-art training ground began in 2007 and was ready for the Lilywhites to move in in 2012 at a cost of around £45million.

Hotspur Way is the main training ground for Spurs’ first team squad and their Academy, located approximately seven miles from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Mauricio Pochettino was instrumental in ensuring the training ground expanded its use during his tenure as Tottenham manager.

There are 15 grass pitches across the training ground, including four dedicated to first team training and one and a half outdoor pitches with floodlighting.

The North London club made environmental protection a priority when designing and constructing Hotspur Way, which has continued since its opening.

The training ground has also become a way for the Lilywhites to enhance their wider community, engaging over 2500 people across all age groups since it opened.

What has been said about Hotspur Way?

Hotspur Way garnered a lot of attention from both staff and players when it opened for business over 15 years ago.

Former Tottenham chairman, Levy, stepped down from his position this year, but was partly credited at the time with the development of the training ground.

He said: “The club set out to create a Training Centre that would be sensitive to its environment and extremely sustainable.

“We have delivered over and above expected requirements through extensive planting and ecological enhancements, as well as created a highly efficient building which far exceeds the requirements of building regulations.”

Meanwhile, former Tottenham winger, Aaron Lennon, who was part of the first cohort of players to use Hotspur Way, said: “It really is an incredible place. While with England, I’ve trained at some of the biggest Clubs’ training grounds, and none of them come close to this. I’m walking around here and I can’t believe that this is our workplace.

“This training centre is not only going to improve us as a team, but it will benefit players at every level at the club and everyone who works here. It’s fantastic that the club has made this happen.”

The training ground continues to be a main attraction for Spurs players, with the hope that it can continue to help the club reach new heights.
