Wilson Odobert saves Thomas Frank, 6/10 mixed bag showing – Tottenham player ratings vs Borussia Dortmund
Tottenham secured a 2-0 Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.
Thomas Frank was nearing the sack at Tottenham ahead of kick-off as performances continue to frustrate fans at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
There were reports in the week that even Ange Postecoglou could return to Spurs and replace the Dane by the end of the month.
It looks as if those can be put on ice for a bit longer after Julian Brandt helped Tottenham score an opener before Dominic Solanke made it two.
Frank will be massively pleased with what he saw from his side, and now Tottenham News has rated each player’s performance out of 10.
Wilson Odobert star of the show vs Borussia Dortmund
Odobert has been positive for Tottenham in recent weeks after facing difficulties in N17 since his move from Burnley last summer.
The 21-year-old proved that he can do it on the big-stage for the Lilywhites as he made all the difference against the Bundesliga giants.
He grabbed two assists on the night, but didn’t stop there, completing the most dribbles on the pitch with four and creating the most chances with four.
To add to that, the Frenchman maintained a 97 per cent pass accuracy, took one shot and also won seven duels as his all-action performance helped Spurs to a much-needed win.
Frank needs to get his arm around Odobert now and help build his confidence as a top-level winger.
That is the least the wide man deserves after putting in the performance to potentially save the head coach from facing the sack.
Xavi Simons had up and down night for Tottenham
It was certainly a night where fans expected Xavi Simons to flourish based on his previous years playing in Germany.
The first half looked as if the Netherlands international could show his best for the Lilywhites, but his showing ebbed away as the second 45 went on.
The 22-year-old did show flashes of excellence, but would have expected to get at more than one of his five shots on target in North London.
| Stat vs Borussia Dortmund | Xavi Simons |
| Minutes played | 90 |
| Shots | 5 |
| Shot accuracy | 20% |
| Accruate crosses | 0 |
| Dispossessed | 2 |
| Duels won | 6 |
That isn’t helped by the fact that he didn’t create a single chance, but is benefitted by a stronger performance when defending from the front.
Simons chipped in with three tackles, four recoveries and six duels as he looked to stop the away side from building play from the back.
It certainly helped, but Frank would have expected more from the attacking midfielder going forward, especially up against 10 men.
