Werner might not start for Tottenham again as Postecoglou slaughters Spurs ace
Ange Postecoglou looks to have hinted that Timo Werner might not start for Tottenham ever again.
Postecoglou was in desperate need of a result against Rangers in the UEFA Europa League at Ibrox on Thursday 12 December, with the Australian under intense pressure.
The Ibrox faithful made sure to remind the former Celtic boss of that fact after Hamza Igamane opened the scoring for the hosts minutes into the second half.
However, Dejan Kulusevski was able to draw Spurs level and slightly ease the pressure on his manager, with the European clash ending 1-1 between the two clubs. Many of Postecoglou’s players let him down on Thursday evening, with one forward branded a “disgrace” after what he did in the build-up to Rangers’ goal.
And it seems as though the Australian let frustrations boil over and was in no mood to protect his players after the draw. Speaking post-match, Postecoglou was asked about Werner and said [via ibroxrocks on X, 12 December], “His performance was unacceptable.
“We have youngsters doing their best and he is a senior international and plays like that.”
Therefore, it is perhaps fair to suggest that Werner might not start again between now and the end of the season when his loan deal with Tottenham comes to an end.
Ange Postecoglou tears Timo Werner to shreds after Tottenham draw v Rangers
It is hard to blame Postecoglou for being so angry with Werner, who was perhaps a surprise inclusion in the starting lineup ahead of kick-off.
As per Sofascore, the winger completed just 68 per cent of his passes, with both of his crosses into the box inaccurate. In addition, he managed just one shot which was off target, while zero per cent of his dribble attempts were successful.
He gave possession away 16 times and defensively was just as poor, losing all five of his ground duels and being dribbled past once. As a result, it feels as though Postecoglou had no choice but to hook the German at the break.

Spura have been urged to cut ties with Werner at the end of the season, and should Postecoglou still be in charge of the club, it seems as though he won’t have any problem doing just that after what he said.
