Tottenham: Tim Sherwood hails ‘brilliant’ Brennan Johnson after game-changing display v Luton

Tottenham fought to a 2-1 victory against Luton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium despite a frustrating performance thanks to game-changing substitutions from Ange Postecoglou.

It was Brennan Johnson who made all the difference from the bench, assisting both goals in the comeback victory after coming on at half-time in a masterstroke from the boss.

With 70 per cent of the possession, 17 shots, four on target and 2.98 xG compared to Luton’s 20 per cent possession, seven shots, three on target and 0.39 xG, Spurs’ victory was well-earned.

Tim Sherwood was stunned by the winger’s performance live on Sky Sports [30 March, 16:11] as he gushed: “It’s 1-1, Ange did his job, he made the changes, Kulusevski came off for Brennan Johnson who just made the goal there.

“He plays a 1-2 down the right-hand side, whips the ball to the back post where Timo Werner is coming in, Kabore comes in and he just smashes it into his own net. He’s just kicked it into his own net.

“All square. Brennan Johnson was brilliant down the right-hand side.”

Brennan Johnson shines in Tottenham v Luton

Sherwood’s praise for Johnson was well-earned as he continued to perform after creating the first goal. His two assists were backed up by recording three key passes, while he also attempted one cross and one long pass to create opportunities in the final third. [Sofascore]

Postecoglou will also be inspired by his work on the defensive side of his game. With a 100 per cent ground duel success rate and one tackle, he put in a shift when required, while also drawing a foul to ease any pressure building on his team.

As always, though, there is room for improvement going forward. His two shots, one of which hit the target while the other was blocked, resulted in a total of 0.87 xG, but with one big chance missed, he will want to find the back of the net with more consistency.

Archie Gray could feature frequently under Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham this season

Johnson’s role as an impact sub may suit him perfectly given his physical attributes, particularly comparing this display to the one he put in against Fulham in which he recorded just two key passes and missed two big chances.

If he can find more consistency in his game, perhaps with more frequent appearances coming from the bench, Johnson could prove crucial to Tottenham’s challenge for the Champions League places.
