Tottenham star Ryan Sessegnon spotted in first-team training on Wednesday

Tottenham supporters would have been beginning to wonder if they would ever see Ryan Sessegnon again.

Sessegnon has made just one competitive appearance for Spurs since he came off the bench in a 1-0 win over Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 5 February 2023.

Almost an entire year had passed when he returned to action against Burnley in another 1-0 home win on 5 January 2024, and he hasn’t been seen since.

Since the start of 2023, the Englishman has played just eight times, with seven of those appearances coming between January and February of last year.

It is fair to say that it has been an incredibly tough time for the 23-year-old, who hasn’t enjoyed much luck since he joined Spurs from Fulham for a fee of £25million almost five years ago now (BBC Sport, 8 August 2019).

His move to North London has failed miserably, but he is still young and will be keen to use the second half of this season to relaunch his career as much as he possibly can.

While nothing official has been communicated from the club, it looks as if he could be nearing a return to action after he was spotted in first-team training footage posted to Spurs’ official X account on Wednesday 14 February.

Within the footage, which showcases Tottenham’s players getting ready to host Wolves on Saturday 17 February, Sessegnon can be seen taking part in shooting drills alongside in-form striker Richarlison.

Footage of him back on the grass will be a positive sign for Spurs supporters, and it will be interesting to see if Ange Postecoglou shares anything further on his recovery progress this week.

Sessegnon can still save his Tottenham career

The former Fulham star is yet to celebrate his 24th birthday, and there is no doubt that he has plenty of time to turn his footballing fortunes around and perhaps even save his career at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

While it was hard to make a judgement of his 15-minute cameo appearance against Burnley, he did complete 100 per cent of his passes and manage one shot on target as well as one dribble attempt (Sofascore).

It wasn’t much to go off, but his previous performances across his career demonstrate that he is a player who could perhaps suit Postecoglou’s style of play.

Although these performances all came a long time ago, Sessegnon has shown moments of quality in a Spurs shirt when he has been fit.

In a 3-2 win at Bournemouth on 29 October 2022, Sessegnon played as a left-wing-back and got himself on the scoresheet while he also completed 100 per cent of his dribbles, played one key pass, made three tackles and won five of his eight ground duels.

Ange Postecoglou should look to hand an opportunity to George Feeney at Tottenham next season

He has also demonstrated quality while playing at the highest level, starting in a 3-2 home win over Frankfurt in the UEFA Champions League on 12 October 2022.

That night he made seven tackles, played two key passes, won 11 ground duels and completed 100 per cent of his dribbles.

He has certainly done enough in previous seasons to warrant a final opportunity at Spurs between now and the end of the season, and Postecoglou will hope that this return to first-team training is the beginning of a new chapter for Sessegnon.
