Tottenham star Pape Matar Sarr sends message to Ange Postecoglou after what he did on Tuesday
Tottenham star Pape Matar Sarr has reminded Ange Postecoglou of his quality.
It has been a difficult couple of months for Sarr in North London.
After emerging as one of Postecoglou’s key players during the 2023/24 campaign, Sarr has been in and out of the team this season.
Although he has appeared in all seven Premier League games for Tottenham, the midfielder has only started twice in the competition.
Meanwhile, he has started both Spurs’ Europa League matches and their one Carabao Cup fixture, which suggests that Postecoglou sees Sarr as a second-string player.
However, after his most recent performance while on international duty, the 22-year-old has made a strong case to start against West Ham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (19 October), a match in which the North London side could be boosted by the return of a few key players (via Paul O Keefe, 10 October).
Tottenham midfielder Pape Matar Sarr shines for Senegal
Sarr started and completed 90 minutes as Senegal beat Malawi 1-0 at the Bingu National Stadium on Tuesday (15 October).
And his performance in the African Cup of Nations qualifier would have got Postecoglou thinking.
As per Sofascore, the Spurs man completed 92 per cent of his passes, with three of those key. In addition, he also created one big chance, and although both of his crosses were inaccurate, five of his six long balls forward were accurate.
He managed 102 touches of the ball, and of his 12 attempted dribbles, seven of them were successful. However, it was defensively where Sarr really excelled.
As well as winning 12 of his 19 ground duels, he also won 100 per cent of his aerial duels (five out of five), while making two interceptions and three tackles.
It was a big performance and one which might have convinced Postecoglou to reward Sarr with a start.

And with Rodrigo Bentancur set to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines in a huge blow to Spurs (via the Standard, 12 September), this was a welcome reminder that they have a top-quality midfielder who can start in his place.
