Tottenham star only one fighting to save Postecoglou, was a ‘dream’ v Newcastle
Ange Postecoglou has repeated just how proud he is of his Tottenham team despite a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday.
That is because the Australian believes that Spurs were robbed of at least a point at Hotspur Way after VAR did not rule out the Magpies’ opening goal for a handball on Joelinton.
The Brazilian midfielder blocked Lucas Bergvall’s clearance, shown on replays to be with his hand, leading to Anthony Gordon smashing past Brandon Austin, and VAR cleared the incident.
Of course, if this controversial moment had fallen in Spurs’ favour, it could have been a rather different outcome for the team on 4 January, but Newcastle’s dominance likely would have been enough to win anyway.
After Alexander Isak scored to give Eddie Howe’s side the lead, many of the Spurs players shied away from the challenge, but not Pedro Porro. He was absolutely everywhere and was rightfully praised for his assist.
Pedro Porro shows his class in Tottenham defeat v Newcastle United
Speaking live via beIN Sports [4 January, 12:34pm], Andy Townsend said: It’s a great delivery from the right-back – that’s a dream ball. Early on in a game for any centre-forward to go and attack.
Jon Champion added: “It’s the kind of cross that makes the centre-forward salivate.”
The 25-year-old right-back, deservedly, was awarded the Man of the Match award by FotMob, having created two chances, one of which was big, had two efforts at goal and was a threat for 90 minutes.
While he only completed 25 per cent of his eight attempted crosses, he was causing havoc in the penalty area for Dan Burn and Sven Botman, both of whom ended up getting booked in the game.
The full-back was also sure in defence, winning 100 per cent (5/5) of his tackles, 83 per cent of his ground duels and only made a single foul up against Gordon.

Given that he ranks in the top 94, 91 and 79 percentiles for total shots, progressive carries and interceptions [FBref], respectively, it should really come as no surprise.
However, if Postecoglou is to keep his job in North London, he needs his other star players to step up and push the team forward.
