Tottenham: Postecoglou to be disappointed with Timo Werner despite what he did v West Ham United
Ange Postecoglou will be disappointed to walk away from the London Stadium with just a single point, despite taking such an early lead as Tottenham drew 2-2 with West Ham United on Tuesday (2 April).
Timo Werner claimed his third Premier League assist of the season, sliding the ball across for Brennan Johnson to smash home from inside the six-yard box after five minutes.
Spurs failed to capitalise on their early lead as Kurt Zouma headed home 14 minutes later, and the Hammers certainly had the chance to steal all three points.
Though most of Postecoglou’s attacking quartet was far from their usual best, with James Maddison hooked after 70 minutes, Werner’s performance should continue to worry his manager.
Following the narrow 2-1 victory over Luton Town on Saturday 30 March, Alan Hutton dubbed the German “frustrating”, raising the striker’s finishing as a worry.
That was no different against David Moyes’ West Ham side, who managed to reduce his impact on the game from the left flank, with their deep defensive line stopping Werner from making runs in behind.
Timo Werner disappoints despite grabbing all-important assist for Tottenham
Despite notching an assist for Johnson’s opener, making his fifth goal contribution in 10 matches, Werner’s overall performance will be something to look at before a clash with Nottingham Forest on Sunday 7 April.
Compared to his Premier League average for pass accuracy of 82 per cent, as per FotMob, the 28-year-old could only manage to maintain a 70 per cent pass rate. [FotMob]
Werner’s ineffectiveness can be proven by his number of touches, registering just 41 touches throughout his 82 minutes on the pitch, tying in last place among Tottenham players with goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. [FotMob]

The forward also lost possession eight times, was dribbled past once, and was caught offside on one occasion. Considering West Ham’s ability to counterattack, Postecoglou should be extremely disappointed by these underlying statistics. [Sofascore]
While Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison started on the bench, either of these replacements could start over Werner in Spurs’ next fixture.
In other Tottenham news, an ex-Spurs employee has speculated Postecoglou’s potential compensation fee amid Liverpool links.
