Tottenham midfielder Pape Matar Sarr moves Spurs second in all-time Premier League list

Tottenham have now scored in 36 consecutive Premier League games, the second-longest scoring run in the competition’s history.

Spurs have only failed to find the back of the net once in all competitions since Ange Postecoglou arrived in North London when they were beaten 1-0 by Manchester City in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday 26 January.

During their 2-1 win against Brighton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 10 February, Brennan Johnson netted a last-gasp winner which moved the club on to 51 Premier League goals for the season.

That is an average of 2.1 goals scored per match, and thanks to Pape Matar Sarr’s equaliser, only Arsenal now boast a longer scoring run in the Premier League era.

Spurs’ North London rivals scored for 55 consecutive games between May 2001 and December 2002, and Postecoglou and his players will be keen to continue their march toward that record.

They are joint-second with Manchester United who scored for 36 consecutive matches between December 2007 and November 2008, and Liverpool, who achieved the feat between March 2019 and February 2020.

A 1-0 defeat to Wolves at Molineux on 4 March 2023 was the last time Tottenham failed to score in a Premier League game.

Spurs will hope their extraordinary run doesn’t come to an end against the same opposition when they take on the West Midlands-based side at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 17 February.

Tottenham ace Sarr continues to shine

It was a goalscoring comeback for Sarr on what was his first start for Tottenham since he returned from competing at the African Cup of Nations with Senegal.

Postecoglou in particular will be glad to have the midfielder back at Hotspur Way.

The 21-year-old has been a standout performer for the club this season and is quickly developing into a top Premier League player, with his absence in the middle of the park noticeable during January.

His goal against the Seagulls was both Spurs’ 50th of the Premier League season and also kept up the club’s impressive scoring run.

On a personal level, it was Sarr’s third in Spurs colours after he had netted against Manchester United and Bournemouth previously during the current campaign.

As per Sofascore, his overall performance was a confident one against Roberto De Zerbi’s side as he completed 83 per cent of his passes and 100 per cent of the long balls which he played forward.

He saw two shots blocked in addition to his goal and made one interception, but struggled ever so slightly defensively as he lost three of his four ground duels and was dribbled past once.

Nonetheless, it was still a positive afternoon for Sarr, who continues to show an incredible level of awareness in the final third for such a young player.

As seen in the image above, space opened up for Sarr and he was alert to the possibility, bursting forward and latching onto Dejan Kulusevski’s brilliant pass through the lines.

His cutback to Richarlison was deflected off the post by Lewis Dunk and fell kindly to the Senegal international who curled home from close range at the second time of asking.

It was another positive moment for Sarr who will look to continue making history in a Spurs shirt as the season progresses.

In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou will have one 18-year-old star on his radar despite defeat for Spurs’ Under-18s on Saturday.
