Tottenham in ‘positive’ contract talks with Son Heung-min – Paul O Keefe

Tottenham will wish that Son Heung-min could stay with the north London club forever.

Son has been in some of the finest form of his Spurs career following the arrival of Ange Postecoglou last summer.

Off the back of Harry Kane’s £100million switch to Bayern Munich ahead of the 2023/24 season getting underway (Sky Sports News, 13 August), Son has emerged from the shadow of his former teammate and stepped seamlessly into the role of Spurs’ star player.

He leads the scoring charts in north London this season with 12 Premier League goals to his name, as well as a further six assists in the same competition.

Postecoglou’s decision to promote him to the role of club captain appears to have worked wonders, with the 31-year-old seemingly taking to his new leadership role like a duck to water.

If you were to ask many Spurs supporters, they would likely be keen for the South Korea international to retire at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and as per reliable Tottenham insider Paul O Keefe, who is also an FA-registered agent, it appears the club are doing what they can to make that a possibility.

When asked by a fan if the club are looking to renew Son’s “contract for at least two more years,” O Keefe responded via his official X account (13 February), “Yes. They’ve had positive talks a few times already.”

Son the key to success at Tottenham

Many would associate Kane with some of Spurs’ biggest moments over the past decade, but in reality, it is Son who has stepped up more often than not.

During Tottenham’s memorable run to the UEFA Champions League Final during the 2018/19 season, Son was the man who scored three goals over two legs against Manchester City in the quarter-finals.

He also scored in the Round of 16 against Borussia Dortmund, and he has often stepped up when it mattered most, arguably more often than Kane did.

After a difficult season last year, he has looked back to his very best this season and is arguably playing some of his best football under Postecoglou.

Off the back of his return to north London following South Korea’s exit from the AFC Asian Cup, Son came off the bench and provided the match-winning assist in the 2-1 home victory over Brighton on Saturday 10 February.

His performance against the Seagulls was a reminder of his ability, as he completed 92 per cent of his passes, with two of those key, while he also created one big chance which was fired home by Brennan Johnson in the 96th minute (Sofascore).

As per fbref, Son is key to the way that Postecoglou and Spurs play, ranking in the 97th percentile of Premier League forwards this season for the number of progressive passes he has both played (4.51 per 90) and received (9.80 per 90).

His goalscoring tally leaves him in the top 15 per cent of his positional peers (0.63 per 90) in England’s top flight this season, while he ranks in the top six per cent for the number of assists he has provided (0.31 per 90).

He ranks in the 99th percentile for his total expected assisted goals (0.34 per 90) which demonstrates the quality of chances he is creating for his teammates.

Son continues to lead on and off the pitch, and from a Spurs perspective, long may it continue.
