Tottenham: Destiny Udogie flops in 0% display v Fulham, Jamie Redknapp was ‘baffled’

Jamie Redknapp singled out left-back Destiny Udogie for criticism after Tottenham were subject to a 3-0 defeat against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Two goals from Fulham’s in-form striker Rodrigo Muniz and one from Sasa Lukic saw Spurs stunned as they failed to score for the first time this season in a match where they were well and truly beaten.

Despite the defeat and the manner of it, the stats appear favourable for Ange Postecoglou’s men, who racked up 2.37xG, 57 per cent of the possession, and 14 shots.

They were outperformed in every metric other than possession by the hosts, who recorded 2.79xG and took 16 shots, seven of which hit the target, but the crucial point is that Spurs were comfortably beaten on the day.

Destiny Udogie singled out by Redknapp after 3-0 Tottenham loss

Speaking live on Sky Sports [16 March, 19:47], Redknapp ranted: “They were off it from minute one. There was a lethargy about their play, there was no energy.

“Players that have had big performances – Destiny Udogie today was so off it, Bissouma in midfield, James Maddison. They never got to grips, never won individual battles. I was amazed. I can’t fathom what I’ve seen in terms of their energy.”

Then, discussing the second Fulham goal [20:01], Redknapp shared: “This bit of defending and I’ve loved Destiny Udogie this year, magnificent coming into play, but this baffles me how easily he gets beat here.

“Watch this bit of defending, gets beaten and now you’ve got a problem because Brennan Johnson (hasn’t done enough).”

Udogie’s usual marauding displays up the left flank were replaced by a tired and limp attempt in which he provided very little going forward or defensively.

The extent of his defensive contribution despite an attacking onslaught from Fulham was to make just two clearances, and not a single tackle, interception or block, while failing to win a single aerial duel and winning just four ground duels of nine attempted. [Sofascore]

Going forward, where he has proven so effective at times this season, the defender did not attempt a single cross, while recording a lowly 83 per cent pass accuracy, displaying his uncharacteristic sloppiness in possession.

Udogie showed no conviction in his defending either. Not only is it disappointing not to have recorded a single tackle as a full-back, but with two fouls given away and having been dribbled past twice, Redknapp is correct to call out his display.

If Spurs want to reach Champions League qualification this season, the likes of Udogie will have to be significantly more consistent in their performances. They cannot afford games as poor as this one moving forward.
