Tottenham: Cristian Romero shows why Ange Postecoglou loves him after what he did for Argentina

Cristian Romero has proven once again why Ange Postecoglou loves his Tottenham partnership with Micky van de Ven as Argentina beat Costa Rica on Wednesday (27 March).

The centre-back was as solid as a rock in defence as Argentina fired in three second-half goals to over-turn a one-goal deficit against Costa Rica as the two sides faced off in California.

Though Romero was not able to notch any goal involvements on the night, having netted four times in the Premier League this season, the 25-year-old was outstanding in defence, leading by example.

The Spurs man has been known to be a hot-head during his time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, picking up 26 yellow cards and four red cards during two spells at the club since August 2021.

Despite this, Ange Postecoglou has continued to trust the Argentine centre-back, helping to create a formidable centre-back partnership with van de Ven and pushing for a Premier League top-four finish.

Cristian Romero continues Tottenham form during international break

With an average of 92 per cent passing accuracy in the Premier League this season, as per FotMob, Romero is already an exemplary player on the ball.

He still managed to better this for Argentina, boasting a 97 per cent passing accuracy, marking him as the most accurate passer on the pitch to have played 45 minutes or more. [FotMob]

As per FBref, Romero ranks amongst the top 89 percentile for passes completed for centre-backs in the top-five European leagues, as well as the top 88 percentile for progressive passes.

The centre-half was heavily involved throughout the 90 minutes, taking 101 touches and making seven passes into the final third, as per FotMob.

Although Romero did finish the match with two fouls committed, he won 100 per cent of his tackles, while winning four interceptions and four recoveries.

This will come as no surprise, however, boasting a top 94 percentile for tackles, averaging 2.31 tackles per 90 minutes. [FBref]

With just eight matches of the Premier League remaining, Romero is likely to have a very important say in Tottenham’s campaign, with Postecoglou’s side battling Manchester United and Aston Villa for Champions League qualification.
