Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has decision to make as Troy Parrott contract update emerges

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has a decision to make over the future of Spurs forward Troy Parrott.

Parrott is currently playing his football with Excelsior Rotterdam in the Eredivisie (Tottenham Hotspur Official Website, 24 August 2023), and Postecoglou must now decide where the striker’s future lies upon his return to Hotspur Way this summer.

Having made his Premier League debut at the age of 17 during a 5-0 home win against Burnley under Jose Mourinho (7 December 2019), it will feel to many Spurs fans as if Parrott has been around forever.

Parrott is now 22 years old and has therefore reached a make-or-break point in his Tottenham career.

He has never quite kicked on in North London, and loan spells in England to the likes of MK Dons, Ipswich Town and Preston North End proved to be rather unproductive.

However, he is now enjoying the most productive period of his senior footballing career so far out in the Netherlands as he looks to prove his worth to Postecoglou amid a fresh contract update.

As per Football London (26 February), “He (Parrott) has a contract with Spurs until 2025 and there is understood to be an option within it for the club to extend that by another year.”

Does Troy Parrott have a future at Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou?

With news that Parrott’s contract expires in less than 18 months with the option to extend that deal, it essentially means the striker has less than a season and a half left to convince Spurs that they should take up that option.

His form as of late has been mixed, which will make Postecoglou and Spurs’ decision even tougher.

Parrott has registered 10 goal involvements in 20 appearances in the Dutch top flight and has become a regular for his temporary side, playing every minute of Excelsior’s last eight consecutive league matches.

He had arguably the most impressive performance of his career to date in the club’s 3-0 win against Heerenveen on Friday 19 January as he bagged a goal and an assist to inspire his team to victory.

In addition to his two goal contributions, he also hit the woodwork and missed one big chance, completed 100 per cent of his dribbles and played one key pass (Sofascore).

It was the type of performance that would have tempted Spurs and Postecoglou to extend his stay at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and hand him a real opportunity in the first team.

However, his performances since then haven’t been as glamorous.

Parrott has scored just once in five starts since that display against Heerenveen and struggled in his most recent outing as Excelsior were beaten 2-1 at home by Vitesse on Sunday 25 February.

He managed to complete just 62 per cent of his passes and missed one big chance while he also failed with his one dribble attempt.

While he did create one big chance and play one key pass, he only managed to win two of his five ground duels and was also dribbled past once.

Parrott will need to put a more consistent run of form together between now and the end of the season if he hopes to convince Spurs to extend his contract.
