Tottenham: Ange Postecoglou must axe Brennan Johnson v Luton after what happened with Wales

Brennan Johnson is likely to return to Tottenham a very dejected figure after his international disappointment with Wales.

It has been an international break full of mixed fortune for Spurs’ stars

While some players have showcased to Ange Postecoglou why they deserve a place in his starting lineup, others will be returning to North London either fatigued or low on confidence.

And Johnson falls into the latter category.

The 22-year-old started for Wales on Tuesday (26 March) as they lost their 2024 UEFA European Championship play-off final to Poland on penalties following a 0-0 draw at the Cardiff City Stadium.

It was a night of bitter disappointment for the Dragons who would have been full of confidence ahead of kick-off about the prospect of reaching their third consecutive European Championships.

Although it was not meant to be, with the Welsh stars seeing their international dreams go up in smoke right in front of their eyes, and this is something Postecoglou must consider when making his team selection for the visit of Luton Town on Saturday (30 March).

Johnson will understandably be incredibly deflated when he returns to North London, and he likely won’t be in the right frame of mind to play on Saturday after such a crushing blow.

Johnson would have been on cloud nine after Wales’ 4-1 victory over Finland in their Euros play-off semi-final last Thursday (21 March).

The Spurs ace got himself on the scoresheet, while he also completed 83 per cent of his passes, with one of those proving to be key (Sofascore).

In addition, he won 100 per cent of his aerial duels and two fouls for his team, with one of those free-kicks being converted by Neco Williams.

He also played a one-two with Harry Wilson in the buildup to Wales’ first goal in an all-action display.

However, his performance against Poland couldn’t have been more of the opposite.

Johnson was largely anonymous on Tuesday night, failing to register a shot at goal while completing just 50 per cent of his dribble attempts and 80 per cent of his passes.

He offered very little defensively, winning just three of his five ground duels and losing the one aerial duel he contested, while he also gave the ball away six times.

The former Nottingham Forest man was eventually hooked in the 70th minute after providing very little threat for the hosts.

After such a disappointing evening, Johnson’s confidence will be low, and Postecoglou might benefit from keeping him out of the spotlight this weekend in what is a must-win game for Tottenham.

In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou will be delighted as young talent at Hotspur Way continues to dominate on the international stage.
