Son Heung-Min must take Tottenham higher next season after Alan Shearer admission

With a player of Son Heung-Min’s talents in the squad, Ange Postecoglou can feel confident of taking Tottenham to the next level in 2024/25.

Spurs finished fifth in the Premier League – two points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa – and missed out on Champions League qualification for the second successive season.

Son recently earned praise from Alan Shearer, however, who picked the South Korean over Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka in his ‘Premier League Best XI’ – and the Spurs skipper has what it takes to fire the club back into the top four next term.

Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day: Top 10 (20 May), Shearer said: “I’ve got Son, I’m going for Son. I was either going to put Saka or Son, but I’m going to put Son. He’s that good.

“I was just thinking about where I could put him in, but, Son.”

How good is Tottenham star Son Heung-Min?

Son has enjoyed another superb individual season, racking up 17 goals and 10 assists in 35 Premier League appearances totalling 2,948 minutes.

He continued his long-standing trend of finishing chances at a higher rate than expected, scoring roughly five more goals than his Premier League xG of 12.08 would have suggested he should [FotMob].

His 10 assists were well-deserved, too, creating 68 chances in the league, while his link-up play was impressive, completing 872 passes at a success rate of 85.1 per cent – a high figure for a forward.

Son’s attacking presence was not diminished by his commitment to combination play, though – the 31-year-old took 227 touches in opposition boxes this term.

Furthermore, the Tottenham captain is a hard-worker off the ball as well, recovering possession in the final third 33 times and making 80 recoveries.
