Solanke needs to do more for Tottenham despite ‘ridiculous’ moment v Brighton

Ange Postecoglou would have been disappointed with Dominic Solanke’s showing as Tottenham lost their final league game of the season.

Spurs closed out their trying domestic campaign in all too familiar fashion, losing 4-1 against Brighton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (25 May) to record their 22nd defeat in the Premier League.

Solanke’s first-half penalty gave the Londoners brief hope of an elusive Premier League win before the Seagulls turned the game around after the break.

Jack Hinshelwood twice capitalised on calamitous defending from a corner to give his side the lead, before Matt O’Riley and Diego Gomez added to Tottenham’s misery in the final moments of the game.

It dampened the mood around the ground following Spurs’ UEFA Europa League triumph and left plenty of questions surrounding the future of the club and some of their players.

Solanke struggles despite an exceptional penalty v Brighton

It has been an up-and-down season for Solanke at Tottenham.

The striker scored his 16th goal of the season against the Seagulls after Mathys Tel won a penalty in the first half, with Alasdair Gold describing the finish as “ridiculously calm” (25 May).

However, Solanke’s overall performance left a lot to be desired.

The 27-year-old completed just 40 per cent of his passes, succeeded with zero per cent of his attempted dribbles and won zero per cent of his ground duels [Sofascore].

In addition, he gave possession away seven times, was dribbled past twice and failed to manage a shot from open play.

Postecoglou will seek clarity on his future

With the challenging Premier League season finally over, the question on everyone’s lips will be what will happen with Postecoglou.

The Australian’s legacy is assured after delivering the Europa League trophy, but Spurs’ underwhelming showing against the Seagulls only served to emphasise doubts over his capabilities every week.
