Brennan Johnson labelled ‘disgrace’ after what Tottenham ace did v Rangers
Brennan Johnson could have contributed to Ange Postecoglou being sacked by Tottenham after his display against Rangers on Thursday.
Postecoglou arrived in Glasgow for a UEFA Europa League clash with the Gers on 12 December with great pressure on his shoulders, with Daniel Levy expected to make a sack decision in the coming days.
And based on the first-half display, it would have been difficult to blame Levy if he did sack Postecoglou, as the Rangers fans suggested might happen, with Spurs second best all over the pitch, particularly Timo Werner, who was axed at half-time after his woeful display in the opening 45 minutes.
However, somehow things got worse after the break for Postecoglou and Spurs, as Hamza Igamane gave Rangers the lead in the 47th minute, and it was no more than the Gers deserved after their first-half performance.
Luckily for Postecoglou, Dejan Kulusevski, who replaced Werner at the break, drew the visitors level in the 75th minute.
That is how it finished, and it looks as though Postecoglou is safe for now. However, had Kulusevski not salvaged a point for Spurs, the Australian might have been in trouble.
And after Johnson’s poor showing for Rangers’ goal, Postecoglou might have had the Welshman to blame. According to Stephen Thompson [via BBC Radio Scotland, 12 December, 9:08 pm], the forward did not do enough defensively.
“He [James Tavernier] showed [Brennan] Johnson a pair of heels there,” Thompson said.
“Although, Johnson, really to be honest with you, his tracking back was a disgrace.”
Brennan Johnson lets Ange Postecoglou down in Tottenham draw v Rangers
It wasn’t just Johnson’s defensive shortcomings which let Postecoglou down at Ibrox, but his overall display too. The Spurs boss made a triple substitution on the hour mark, and Johnson was one of the players to make way.
As per Sofascore, while the 23-year-old completed 87 per cent of his passes, none of those were key, and he also failed to provide an accurate cross into the box, with his one attempt inaccurate.
In addition, both of his shots were off target, and he succeeded with zero per cent of his dribble attempts. He won just one of his four ground duels and lost both aerial duels, while also giving possession away eight times.
Therefore, it is no surprise that he was hooked by Postecoglou.

And had Spurs lost the match, it is fair to say that the winger might not have been on his manager’s Christmas card list this year.
In other Tottenham news, Levy has been told to sack Postecoglou now and hire a “brilliant” manager.
