Postecoglou makes Lucas Bergvall blunder — Tottenham confirmed XI v Alkmaar

Ange Postecoglou has confirmed his Tottenham starting lineup against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League.

The North London outfit face the Dutch team in the first leg of the round of 16 away from home on Thursday (6 March).

Postecoglou has made a massive blunder with Lucas Bergvall after his performance against Manchester City in the Premier League on 26 February.

Spurs are one of the favourites in the Europa League, but the Australian manager isn’t helping himself with some of the decisions he’s making.

Bergvall error made in Tottenham starting lineup v Alkmaar

Postecoglou has made two changes to his starting lineup as they face Alkmaar at the AFAS Stadion.

The Lilywhites’ three-game unbeaten run in the English top flight came to an end after losing 1-0 to Pep Guardiola’s team.

Spurs have had a long break since then and will arguably be looking to bounce back in the Netherlands.

Djed Spence has replaced Pedro Porro for the Alkmaar clash, while Son Heung-min has come in for Wilson Odobert, with the rest of the team the same.

Spurs Bergvall decision wrong v Alkmaar

Bergvall has been a regular at Spurs in recent matches and has seen his prospects rise since being signed last summer from Djurgardens.

The 19-year-old was one of the most highly rated prospects before coming to North London and has proven his worth this season.

Postecoglou seems to trust Bergvall much more since his impressive display at the Emirates against Arsenal in the 2-1 loss on 15 January.

The Australian manager should have dropped the midfielder to the bench, though, after what he did against Man City.

Bergvall had a combined xG and xA of 0.01, created zero chances and failed 50 per cent of his attempted dribbles in the loss to Guardiola’s team, as per FotMob.

The Swedish national played the entire fixture and had nothing to show for it, with zero shots and zero touches in the opposition box.

While he failed to show any creativity in the final third, the 19-year-old was also weak as he was dribbled past once and won just 64 per cent of his ground duels.

It will be interesting to see how the current lineup will fare against a decent Alkmaar side that sit sixth in the Eredivisie table.
