Pedro Porro speaks out after angry confrontation with Tottenham fans at Bournemouth, and what he’s said is ridiculous

Pedro Porro was one of three Tottenham players to confront the away support at the end of Wednesday night’s defeat to Bournemouth.

On a night where Thomas Frank was seen drinking from an Arsenal-branded cup, Spurs’ miserable season continued.

Although Mathys Tel scored an early opener and Joao Palhinha scored a brilliant equaliser in the 78th minute, Antoine Semenyo netted a late winner for the Cherries.

It was a game that also involved controversy, too, with Micky van de Ven initially winning a penalty before it was overruled after a VAR check.

At full-time, van de Ven, Porro and Palhinha were all involved with angry exchanges with travelling Tottenham fans, with van de Ven even seeming to offer to meet one of the supporters outside of the stadium.

Pedro Porro reacts to Cristian Romero message

It feels like Tottenham are on the verge of civil war after the scenes in Bournemouth.

Cristian Romero has since taken to Instagram to apologise to fans, but the Spurs captain has also made what looks like a dig at the North London club’s senior leadership.

“At times like this, it should be other people coming out to speak, but they don’t — as has been happening for several years now. They only show up when things are going well,” Romero said.

After being dragged away from the Spurs fans by Guglielmo Vicario, Porro had remained silent about his role in the scenes at full-time on the south coast.

It was a disappointing performance by the 26-year-old, with stats by Sofascore showing that he scored a low match rating of just 5.9.

However, despite the controversy and the bad performance, the Spanish right-back still thought it was wise to break his silence by responding to Romero’s post.

He said: “Amen. Let’s keep going, brother. We have many battles ahead.”

Unfortunately, Porro didn’t seem to realise that on Wednesday night, he seemed to show more eagerness to battle with his own fans than he did the Bournemouth players.

Why Porro’s message is utterly baffling

There’s a clear lack of accountability and self-awareness going on here.

Romero is posting on Instagram, seemingly calling out Tottenham’s hierarchy for not speaking up when things aren’t going well. But that happens at every football club – and he should really be careful not to bite the hand that feeds him.

Ultimately, should an Argentine World Cup-winning defender be playing better than he is? Yes, of course he should.

And the cheek for the captain to say this after a handful of his teammates ended up arguing with fans on Wednesday night, with van de Ven looking as though he was after a fight with one of them.

Porro’s message is laughable. He’s talking about having more “battles” on the horizon, yet he showed more fight against Dave from Enfield than he did against Semenyo, whose winning goal came from his side of the pitch.

What stats say about Porro’s display vs Semenyo

As shown above, Porro’s match stats against Bournemouth were mostly down on what he’s averaged already in the Premier League this season.

He didn’t complete as many key passes as he normally does, his pass completion dipped, and he didn’t make as many recoveries of possession as he’s averaged across what has been a dismal campaign for Frank‘s men.

Semenyo completed two out of the three dribbles he attempted, both of them being in Porro’s territory in the Spurs right-back area.

Semenyo’s two completed dribbles were more than his season average in the Premier League (1.7), and he lost possession 15 times, down from a season average of 16.5.

It’s clear that Semenyo is one of the most in-form attackers in England this season, but Porro can’t have the cheek to say what he said on Instagram after the defeat, after his display on the night.
