Mikey Moore out of his depth at Tottenham after ‘naive’ display v Brentford

Mikey Moore didn’t make the best account of himself as Tottenham beat Brentford 2-0 on Sunday.

Tottenham were dealt a huge blow ahead of kick-off in the Premier League at the Gtech Community Stadium on 2 February with Micky van de Ven nowhere to be seen.

However, Ange Postecoglou’s injury update was a reassuring one, and van de Ven’s absence didn’t seem to be felt too greatly as Spurs defended resolutely in West London, keeping a rare clean sheet.

Pedro Porro, Ben Davies, Archie Gray – who was targetted by the home faithful – and Djed Spence were the heroes on the day, with Spurs’ attacks few and far between.

Richarlison, in particular, struggled, while Moore simply looked out of his depth, and was hooked at half-time as a result.

While speaking on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, former Tottenham defender Stephen Kelly said after Moore went down in the penalty area during the first half, [via BBC Sport, 2:38 pm, 2 February], “It’s just a bit of naivety from Mikey Moore.

“You don’t get a chance to take a touch there, you’re going back towards the goal and Collins comes across and gives him a shove.”

Moore is still 17 years old. Therefore, it is important that fans are patient with the young forward.

However, he certainly looked out of his depth in the first half at the Gtech Community Stadium. As per Sofascore, while Moore completed 100 per cent of his passes, with two of those key, his one cross into the box was inaccurate, and he also succeeded with zero per cent of his dribble attempts.

What was most concerning was his lack of physicality as the England youth international lost all three of his ground duels and his one aerial duel, while he also gave possession away seven times.

Postecoglou won’t be too concerned. However, it is a sign that patience is needed when it comes to Moore, as he still isn’t quite ready for the Premier League.
