Marco Rose appointment makes total sense, he’d instantly save ENIC £52m for Tottenham

Marco Rose would be an excellent appointment for Tottenham, and his arrival could save ENIC from a £52m mistake.

After Thomas Frank was sacked, Spurs are in the market for a new manager, as they also look to avoid a possible relegation down to the Championship.

Rose has now emerged as a front-runner for the Tottenham job, and there would be a lot of benefits from him joining the Lilywhites.

Rose’s last job in football was as the manager of RB Leipzig, where he worked with marquee summer signing Xavi Simons.

How Marco Rose could help Xavi Simons hit his peak at Tottenham

Simons arrived with a lot of expectation from RB Leipzig in the summer, and while he has impressed on occasion, it would be a fair assessment to say he has not been the world beater he was touted to be so far.

As a highly respected talent who arrived with a £52m price tag, in 31 appearances, the Dutch attacker has just seven goal contributions. A quite unimpressive level of output.

Frank seemingly was unable to nurture Simons’ qualities, but the arrival of a man who had the 22-year-old playing some of his best football could finally unlock him.

At Leipzig, Simons was the star of the show, and Rose was able to get him involved in the action much more than Frank was capable of.

The 2023-2024 season was perhaps the former Leipzig man’s breakout year, where he ended the Bundesliga campaign with eight goals and 11 assists in 32 appearances.

He followed that up the following season with a combined 17 goal contributions (10 goals and seven assists) in 25 appearances, although Rose was sacked with seven games remaining that year.

An exceptional output, and the level that Spurs fans had been hoping for this season. Additionally, in 31 games this season, Simons has created 11 big chances, as per Sofascore.

However, in a similar number of games last season, he created 19 in 33 appearances.

Where would Simons play under Rose at Tottenham?

If Rose is confirmed as Tottenham head coach, then Simons could be in line for a positional change in N17.

Under Frank, the Dutchman has primarily been deployed as an attacking midfielder, although during the final weeks of the Dane’s spell, he was used as a wide number 10.

However, under Rose at Leipzig, he was predominantly an out-and-out winger.

In Germany, Simons played 51.8% of his games as a left-winger, according to Transfermarkt, and if Rose takes the job at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, it would not be a surprise to see him use the 22-year-old in that role.

With Wilson Odobert now out with an ACL injury, the Lilywhites are light in the wide areas, and Simons could find his peak once again in that role.

Rose could unlock Simons and finally show the player that forced Spurs to break the bank in the summer. In that regard, his arrival would make total sense for Tottenham.
