Maddison injury heartbreak: How many games has playmaker missed for Tottenham?
James Maddison has had little luck with injuries throughout his time at Tottenham.
The England international has consistently struggled with fitness since his move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which has limited his game time.
At the back end of last season, Maddison was forced to miss the Europa League final through injury, in what was a big personal blow for the 28-year-old.
Now, Maddison has been hit with another injury blow in their pre-season friendly against Newcastle United.

Maddison has missed over 20 matches since signing for Tottenham
While the extent of Maddison’s injury against Newcastle is yet to be known, it looks likely that the 28-year-old will be missing more matches for the upcoming campaign.
This is not uncommon for the attacking midfielder, with the England international missing 24 matches since signing for the London club in 2023.
- Maddison has struggled with injuries throughout his career
- The England international has missed over 50 matches since 2020
- Maddison picked up another injury against Newcastle in a pre-season friendly in August 2025
His first major injury came in November 2023, as Maddison suffered ankle ligament damage. This kept him out of 17 matches, affecting all domestic competitions.
In the 2024/25 campaign, a minor muscular injury in March 2025 also kept the attacker out of seven matches during a busy period of the season.
On top of this, the 28-year-old has had a few knocks, which have added up to 24 competitive matches missed in just two seasons.

Frank should consider Maddison sale
While this is unlikely to be doable this summer, given his recent injury, Thomas Frank should still consider a Maddison sale in the near future.
It has become evident over the last two seasons that the 28-year-old is simply incapable of staying off the sidelines.

This will make the Dane’s life 10 times harder when preparing for the long-term future of the squad.
Therefore, Tottenham should consider just cashing in on Maddison at the next available opportunity.
The fee for the attacking midfielder could help finance a replacement who can play an entire campaign.
