James Maddison ‘special’ despite Tottenham embarrassment v Tamworth

Marc Albrighton hailed James Maddison as a “special player” for Tottenham despite their difficulties in overcoming Tamworth in the FA Cup.

Spurs progressed to the next round of the competition with a 3-0 extra-time win over Tamworth, but the performance on Sunday (12 January) was beyond dismal.

The display led to supporters asking for Ange Postecoglou to be sacked, but it didn’t stop Albrighton from hailing Maddison live on talkSPORT [12 January, 12:52 pm].

Tottenham woeful despite ‘special’ James Maddison

From a team perspective, the performance of Tottenham was woeful and the 3-0 scoreline flatters them beyond belief.

Tamworth were perhaps unfortunate to not come away with a place in the next round but the role of Maddison played a part in preventing that.

According to FotMob, Maddison completed 87 per cent of his 71 attempted passes in the tie, with two chances created from them.

From an attacking point of view, he did everything aside from finding the finishing touch, with three of his four shots hitting the target but registering a minimal xG (expected goals) of 0.29.

Zero per cent of his attempted dribbles saw him retain the ball, while eight passes into the final third proved worthless due to the lack of attacking threat in front of him.

Maddison had plenty of work to do off the ball as well, having won 70 per cent of his defensive ground duels with four defensive actions outside of that.

It was by no means a display to be proud of, but Maddison was by no means the worst part of what was a dismal display against the non-league side.

In other Tottenham news, one player was told he needs to leave the club after what he did against Tamworth.
