Glenn Hoddle blasts Kevin Danso after incident in Tottenham defeat v Man City

Kevin Danso had a moment to forget as Tottenham were beaten 1-0 by Manchester City in the Premier League.

Ange Postecoglou took a risk by making some big changes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday (26 February).

Son Heung-min was left on the bench, with Wilson Odobert handed his first Spurs start since August after his recent return from injury.

Dejan Kulusevski was also left out, with James Maddison taking his place, just as Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham suggested would happen while speaking exclusively with Tottenham News.

Those changes came back to bite Postecoglou as Pep Guardiola’s side claimed a rare win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, it was one of the defensive players who was to blame for the defeat in North London.

Erling Haaland opened the scoring after 12 minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in what turned out to be the only goal of the evening.

Jeremy Doku was causing plenty of problems for Destiny Udogie and the Spurs backline, and Haaland had his teammate to thank for providing him with the match-winning assist. However, Glenn Hoddle was not impressed by the defending which allowed Haaland to find the back of the net.

The former Spurs midfielder was particularly disappointed by Danso, saying on commentary for TNT Sports’ live coverage of the match [via BBC Sport, 26 February, 7:45 pm], “Man City switch the ball out well to [Jeremy] Doku, who has far too much time and can play with his head up.

“And [Erling] Haaland won’t find a simpler goal than that. [Kevin] Danso is caught ball-watching and you can’t give Haaland that much space and time. It was poor defending from Tottenham.”

Danso must improve for Tottenham

Danso has had a tough start to life at Tottenham.

Due to injuries, the defender has been thrown into some big games since arriving at the club late in the winter transfer window. Therefore, fans and Postecoglou need to give him time.

However, he will no doubt want to improve after shipping so many goals in a Spurs shirt already. Luckily, he has a big chance to prove himself when the UEFA Europa League returns.
