Bergvall now undroppable despite Tottenham v Liverpool incident

Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall’s display and winning goal against Liverpool on Wednesday make him a shoe-in for Ange Postecoglou going forward.

Bergvall started in the middle of the part and played the full 90 minutes of the Lilywhites’ EFL Cup semi-final first leg in North London, popping up in the 86th to score and give Spurs the advantage.

That leaves Ange Postecoglou’s side with the ‘half-time’ lead ahead of second leg at Anfield on 6 February, and with Rodrigo Bentancur potentially out for a lengrthy period after being stretchered off in the first half, Bergvall’s place in midfield is assured.

Still just 18, Bergvall’s first-team prospects have undoubtedly been boosted by the ongoing injury crisis in North London, but once Spurs’ midfield stocks are back to full strength, he could well keep his place.

Although an out-and-out central midfielder, Bergvall brought his shooting boots against the Reds, having two efforts on goal and scoring the latter, recording 0.22 xG and a 100 per cent shot accuracy [FotMob].

Bergvall also managed 1.02 expected goals on target (xGOT) with his two efforts on Wednesday, and had four touches in the Liverpool box, creating three big chances and completing two final-third passes.

His passes were completed at an 85 per cent accuracy overall [SofaScore], with the teenage Sweden international also winning 50 per cent of his two attempted dribbles and his 10 ground duels [FotMob].

Defensively too though, Bergvall certainly put himself about, winning 67 per cent of his tackles and putting in six actions in total, with two clearances and recovering possession a further three times.

Postecoglou still has players to welcome back from injury, allowing Dejan Kulusevski and Archie Gray to rejoin the midfield line, but both will do well to take the place of Bergvall after that breakout performance.
