Ben Davies handed chance to save Tottenham career as Fabrizio Romano shares Destiny Udogie news

Ben Davies may have been handed a chance to save his Tottenham career after an update has emerged on Destiny Udogie.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano tweeted on Saturday (20 April) that the 21-year-old left-back is expected to be out for about three months after undergoing season-ending surgery.

He added that the Italian international will also miss the European Championships this summer as he looks to return to fitness ahead of the start of next season.

While it is a major blow for Spurs in their pursuit of Champions League football over the next few weeks, it could present Davies with an opportunity to impress.

The Welsh international has been forced to watch on from the sidelines for the majority of the campaign, with Udogie putting in a number of excellent performances since returning from his loan spell at Udinese.

Davies has only started one Premier League game in this calendar year, coming in Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat at home to Wolves on 17 February.

His performances have been reasonable on the whole, having made 16 outings in the league this season, most of which came during the injury crisis towards the back end of last year.

The left-back has earned an average SofaScore rating of 7.04, having recorded 1.3 tackles, 2.1 clearances and 2.9 ball recoveries per game.

He’s also registered an impressive 92 per cent pass accuracy after averaging 59.3 touches in Ange Postecoglou’s system.

But Davies hasn’t quite been as effective going forwards after finding a teammate with just 10 per cent of his crosses, successfully completing only 33 per cent of his dribbles and missing three big chances.

Although the 30-year-old, who turns 31 next week, has a year left to run on his contract, he has been linked with a move away from North London.

It’s clear that Postecoglou now only sees him as a backup option and, with the Lilywhites likely to strengthen again this summer, that could raise question marks around Davies’s future.

Given that he is the only fit option to start on the left-hand side of the defence, he should receive plenty of minutes throughout the final six games of the campaign.

That could provide him with the perfect opportunity to show the Spurs boss why he at least deserves to remain at the club next season.
