Alan Shearer blown away by ‘Superb’ Spence moment in Tottenham win v Brentford

Alan Shearer was blown away by Djed Spence’s goal-line clearance for Tottenham as they secured a 2-0 win against Brentford.

Their weekend victory against Brentford brought Spurs their second win in as many games, with Spence starring heavily in the clash.

Having impressed in several appearances there throughout the season, Spence was utilised at left-back and produced a goal-saving moment when clearing what would have been a certain goal off the line.

Shearer, after naming Spence in his Premier League Team of the Week [4 February], said: “[Spence] produced a superb goal-line clearance and didn’t give Bryan Mbuemo a kick.”

Djed Spence on fire for Tottenham v Brentford

Spence has been a real positive for Spurs in what has been a dismal campaign to date, with his performance against Brentford showcasing that yet again.

Via FotMob, the defender completed 84 per cent of his 37 attempted passes, creating two chances in the process.

Although he only attempted one cross, it was completed with pinpoint accuracy, as was the majority of his performance.

Spence completed all three of his attempted dribbles in the game – the most of anyone on the pitch – and played a crucial role in transition, which proved pivotal to Tottenham getting a result.

The 24-year-old thrived just as much defensively, having won 75 per cent of his tackles and seven out of 10 attempted ground duels.

With seven recoveries and five clearances, Brentford found it hard to get anything out of Spence the entire game, with Spurs able to secure all three points and a clean sheet.
