Agbonlahor wowed by ‘fantastic’ Spence for Tottenham, he put Udogie to shame

Gabby Agbonlahor was impressed by Djed Spence’s showing for Tottenham in their EFL Cup victory against Manchester United.

Tottenham advanced to the semi-finals on 19 December with a 4-3 win against the Red Devils despite a collection of howlers from Fraser Forster.

Spence impressed when Spurs beat Southampton and was handed another starting role on Thursday night with his impact lauded by Agbonlahor live on talkSPORT (20 December, 7:21 am)

“I thought he was fantastic,” Agbonlahor said. “On the ball, getting forward and defensively as well.”

“Hopefully he gets more game time.”

Djed Spence puts Destiny Udogie to shame at Tottenham

Destiny Udogie has been the go-to left-back for the majority of his time at Spurs but his performances so far this season have been largely underwhelming whereas Spence has thrived.

Having occupied the right-back role against Southampton, he was utilised on the left against Man Utd and his performance was impressive and Agbonlahor’s shout for more game time is justified.

According to FotMob, Spence completed 83 per cent of passes in the encounter from 47 attempts which given he was playing on his weaker side, is some feat.

He never attempted a cross in the game but his willingness to keep things simple was crucial while taking the occasional risk to good effect.

Of course, he registered another assist, setting up Dominic Solanke for the third of the night with an xA (expected assists) of 0.2, showcasing his ability to create yet again.

The 24-year-old won 50 per cent of his tackles while coming out as the victor in 75 per cent of his aerial duels.

With 11 defensive actions and seven recoveries, he was solid enough defensively to prevent Man Utd’s comeback from turning the game on its head.

Ange Postecoglou simply has to utilise Spence more often to reap the full benefits that he can offer.

In other Tottenham news, Gary Neville was stunned with what happened on Thursday night.
