Tottenham Women: Vicky Jepson wants Beth England in Lionesses’ World Cup squad
Bethany England’s form should earn her a spot in the Lionesses’ squad for the upcoming Women’s World Cup, says interim Tottenham head coach Vicky Jepson.
Striker England joined Spurs in January and her brace in a 4-1 win over Reading on Saturday (20 May) ensured another season in the Women’s Super League next term.
England has 12 goals in the WSL this season, with only two players scoring more, and Jepson has no doubt the Women’s Euro 2022 winner should have a spot in Sarina Wiegman’s squad for the tournament in Australia and New Zealand.
“I do think she should be going to the World Cup,” Jepson said in quotes reported by Football London.
“I’m not going to tell Sarina how to do her job, it’s up to her.
“She’s a top English goalscorer in the WSL. For me, why would you not want to her in your team?”
England inclusion a no-brainer for Lionesses
When England swapped Chelsea for London rivals Tottenham Women in January, the main reason for doing so was to ensure she was getting enough game time ready for the World Cup.
Well, that objective has been achieved and she has been growing in importance and stature for a Spurs side who will remain a WSL outfit next season.
Only Rachel Daly (21) and Khadija Shaw (18) can boast more WSL goals than England this term and she will be a very handy attacking weapon when the Lionesses head down under.
Moreover, with Beth Mead – the top scorer at Euro 2022 – highly unlikely to feature due to an ACL injury, Fran Kirby undergoing knee surgery in February, and Ellen White having retired, Wiegman will need as much attacking firepower as she can find.
Well, in England, she certainly has a woman in form and she is more than deserving of a spot on the plane.
