Tottenham Women: Rebecca Spencer the hero as history is made against Manchester City Women

Tottenham Women made yet more history this season as they advanced to the semi-finals of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

Robert Vilahamn has inspired Spurs to arguably their most successful season in the club’s history.

After their first-ever win against North London rivals Arsenal Women back in December, the Austrian has now guided Tottenham to their first-ever semi-final appearance in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup after a penalty shootout victory against Manchester City Women on Sunday (10 March).

Spurs have faced Manchester City on three times this occasion, losing all three, and it appeared that the fourth time was the charm for Vilahamn and his players.

With City having knocked both Spurs’ men’s team and Under-18s out of the FA Cup and FA Youth Cup, the Women were on hand to gain some revenge at Brisbane Road.

After Mary Fowler had given the visitors a very early lead, with her sixth-minute strike taking a heavy deflection off of Amy James-Turner, Spurs waited until the final moments to equalise as Bethany England capitalised on a mix-up at the back.

With either side unable to find a winner in extra time, the match was sent to penalties where Rebecca Spencer was on hand to write her name in Tottenham history.

Penalty shootouts are often decided by either a moment of brilliance from a goalkeeper or a moment to forget for an outfield player.

On this occasion, it was the former, as Spencer stood strong and saved City’s first two penalties to put Spurs in a commanding position in the tie, with the Jamaica international denying both Alex Greenwood and Chole Kelly.

With the deciding spot kick left up to James-Turner, the defender made no mistake as she slotted home to book Spurs a place in the final four of the FA Cup.
