Tottenham Women duo Martha Thomas and Beth England must get back to scoring ways

For the third time this season, Tottenham Women drew a blank against Manchester City Women as they were eliminated from the Continental Tyres League Cup.

Robert Vilahamn’s side were beaten 1-0 by Manchester City at Brisbane Road in the last eight of the competition on Wednesday 7 February.

It was the second time in 10 days City had run out victors from Brisbane Road, having beaten Spurs 2-0 in the FA Women’s Super League on 28 January to complete the league double over their North London rivals after a 7-0 win in Manchester earlier in the season (26 November).

Vilahamn and the Spurs players are likely sick of the sight of City having conceded 10 times to them across three matches this season and will be looking to bounce back from their latest setback when they take on Charlton Women in the Women’s FA Cup fifth round on Saturday 10 February.

Tottenham will want to ensure they don’t exit both cup competitions in the space of three days and need to get themselves back among the goals after scoring just once across their last three matches in all competitions.

Martha Thomas and Beth England must improve for Tottenham Women

Considering the rate both of these players have scored at on an individual basis, many Tottenham supporters probably thought they would form a deadly duo alongside each other.

However, that hasn’t quite been the case. They have just one goal between them when starting alongside each other for Spurs so far, Thomas’ strike against Arsenal Women at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 16 December.

They perhaps just need some time to develop an understanding of playing alongside each other, and Vilahamn will be hoping that understanding is built sooner rather than later.

After a sensational start to life in a Spurs shirt, England has made an underwhelming return to action from injury while the goals have dried up for Thomas in recent weeks after her fast start in North London.

Spurs have been on a tough run, and they will hope that a more favourable clash with Charlton on Saturday can allow Thomas and England the opportunity to get back to scoring ways.

In other Tottenham news, one 84 per cent Spurs ace is continuing to improve under Vilahamn.
