Everything you need to know as Tottenham Women draw Chelsea in FA Cup – Dates, prize money and more
Tottenham Women are set for a well-earned break from club action following their recent FA Cup exploits.
Martin Ho’s side secured their passage to the FA Cup quarter-finals following a dramatic 9-8 penalty shootout win against London City Lionesses.
Matilda Vinberg’s goal put Spurs in the lead after just seven minutes on Monday, before quickfire goals from Danielle van de Donk and Jana Fernandez saw the hosts take the lead in the 59th minute.
Arriving as a second-half substitute, Tottenham skipper Bethany England would level from the penalty spot in the 96th minute, before Lize Kop made the difference in the shootout – saving Wassa Sangare’s effort to send Spurs to the quarter final.
With the Women’s Super League now paused until 15 March, Ho’s side are set for a break over the coming weeks. Sitting fifth, and in the quarter-finals of the cup, Spurs have a lot to work with as the season reaches its crunch point.
Tottenham set for big derby clash as FA Cup draw made
With quarter-final fixtures set to be played on the weekend of 4/5 April, the draw was completed for the next round following Tottenham’s exploits on Monday.
Those who progress to the semi-finals will receive £90,000 from the competition prize fund, while the losing side will pick up £22,500.
Making the short trip across the capital, Spurs have been set up to face London rivals Chelsea, who beat Manchester United 2-1 at Kingsmeadow on Sunday thanks to goals from Sam Kerr and Naomi Girma.
Sitting third in the WSL, Sonia Bompastor’s side beat Spurs 2-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier this month, via goals from Keira Walsh and Alyssa Thompson.
Elsewhere, the draw sees the following sides go head-to-head for a semi-final spot:
- Charlton Athletic vs Liverpool
- Arsenal vs Brighton & Hove Albion
- Birmingham City vs Manchester City
Clashes will take place over the weekend of 4/5 April, before the semi-finals and final will take place at Wembley on 9/10 May, and Sunday 31 May respectively.
What did Martin Ho say after Tottenham penalty exploits?
Speaking to TNT Sports following his side’s penalty shootout win, Spurs manager Ho expressed the importance of the response, after trailing for large periods of the second half.
“We needed to respond, and what this group has definitely done this season is respond in the right way,” said Ho.
“We responded, we pushed, we changed things a little bit tactically to try and push them back. We had some moments in extra time, both teams were tired by that point, but I thought we defended better in extra time than we did in the 90 minutes.”
Spurs shotstopper Kop made the difference in the subsequent shootout, sparking a fantastic moment infront of the travelling Spurs fans – something that Ho believes is vital for the morale of the group.
“They’re the moments that these players will cherish,” Ho told TNT. “Even getting through to a quarter-final, there’s not many players who can say they have been there, and you have to make sure that you enjoy these moments when they come.”
With WSL paused ahead of the upcoming international fixtures, Spurs are back in action in the league on 15 March, as they welcome Everton to North London.
