Drew Spence struggles in Tottenham Women defeat v Aston Villa Women
Drew Spence let Robert Vilahamn down as Tottenham Women were beaten by Aston Villa Women on Sunday.
Vilahamn’s side suffered their 11th Barclays Women’s Super League defeat of the season on 20 April as they were beaten 3-2 by Villa at Brisbane Road.
It means Tottenham have now lost eight of their last nine matches in all competitions.
After putting a stop to their run of six straight defeats by drawing 1-1 with Leicester City Women at the King Power Stadium on 30 March ahead of the international break, Spurs would have seen a home match against a team starting the day five points below them as a perfect chance to get back to winning ways.
However, that isn’t how things panned out in North London, with Spence in particular struggling.

Spence disappoints in Tottenham defeat v Aston Villa
Vilahamn was handed some positive news over the international break as Eleanor Heeps put pen to paper on a new contract with Tottenham.
In addition, some of the Spurs stars shone while in action for their countries across the two-week break.
However, the North London side were unable to capitalise on any of that momentum, and instead slipped to another disappointing defeat against Villa as Kirsty Hanson stepped off the bench to score a stoppage-time winner in a five-goal thriller, in which Spence struggled to make her mark.
Barclays Women’s Super League | Position | Points |
Everton Women | 8th | 20 |
Tottenham Women | 9th | 18 |
Leicester City Women | 10th | 16 |
As per Sofascore, the midfielder completed just 80 per cent of her passes, with none of those key, while zero per cent of her crosses and long balls were accurate.
In addition, the 32-year-old won just 50 per cent of her ground duels and lost her one aerial duel, and while she did succeed with two of her three dribble attempts, she also gave possession away 17 times.
Spence needs to step up at Tottenham
Spence is one of Spurs’ more experienced players.
Therefore, with Tottenham struggling, the midfielder needs to step up in the coming weeks and help the Lilywhites end the season on a high.
