Werner dreadful in 3/10, best gets 8/10 – Tottenham player ratings v Newcastle

Ange Posteceoglou will be fuming after his Tottenham side let a one-goal lead slip against Newcastle United on Saturday.

Dominic Solanke pounced on a brilliant first-half cross from Pedro Porro, firing past Martin Dubravka before Anthony Gordon netted a rather contentious effort just two minutes later.

Spurs had hit the self-destruct button, attempting to play out from the back, with Alexander Isak hitting the final nail into the coffin, scoring the winner before the half-time break in a 2-1 defeat on 4 January.

Tottenham News rated each player’s performance out of 10.

Brandon Austin – 6

Incredibly well-composed for the 25-year-old’s first Premier League start, having been thrown into the lineup with Fraser Forster sidelined through illness. Nothing he could do about the goals.

Djed Spence – 6

A much-needed addition to the backline after serving his suspension. Has really impressed since returning to Spurs’ squad in the summer and is a suitable replacement for Destiny Udogie.

Archie Gray – 6

The 18-year-old is doing the absolute best he can while out of position, often having to dig his more experienced teammates out of deep holes.

Radu Dragusin – 5

Unlucky not to block the ball into Isak for Newcastle’s second goal. Was taken off at the half-time break, which will be a massive concern if at all injury-related.

Pedro Porro – 8

Incredible attacking play from the Spaniard, deservedly getting his assist for Solanke’s opener. Was a threat all game but to no avail.

Lucas Bergvall – 6

Hotspur Way was quite surprised to see him substituted on the hour mark, which tells you everything you need to know about the Swedish midfielder’s performance. Really took control.

Pape Sarr – 4

A much quieter performance from Sarr in midfield. Not comfortable at all taking possession under pressure and his slack passing led to the opening goal.

Timo Werner – 3

Many fans calling for the German’s loan deal to be terminated this month, and after yet another disappointing display, it is easy to see why.

Dejan Kulusevski – 5

Attempted to push his team up the pitch at any available moment but could not find the final ball or pass to the attackers around him.

Brennan Johnson – 5

Hit the woodwork, but other than that close-range effort, he was incredibly quiet compared to his normal outings at Hotspur Way.

Dominic Solanke – 7

Was provided with limited service in the final third but took his chance when it fell to him, working tirelessly to get on the end of Porro’s crosses.

Substitutions

Sergio Reguilon (On for Dragusin 46′) – 4

Wasted a massive chance to equaliser from a tight angle, firing his effort straight across the penalty area and out for a throw-in.

James Maddison (On for Bergvall 62′) – 7

Made a huge impact after replacing Bergvall, having a couple of shots at goal and creating chances quite easily.

Yves Bissouma (On for Sarr (62′) – 7

Did exceptionally well to win nearly almost all of his battles after entering the pitch, putting Bergvall and Sarr to shame in the centre of the park.

Son Heung-min (On for Werner 62′) – N/A
