Tottenham have ‘easy Semenyo decision’ after Bournemouth developments

Tottenham are looking to build a team capable of competing in next season’s UEFA Champions League, after qualifying as Europa League champions.

Ange Postecoglou’s successor, Thomas Frank, will hope to receive plenty of money to spend on new players as a result of Spurs’ qualification for Europe’s elite tournament.

However, the Dane shouldn’t fall into the trap of spending silly money on players who aren’t proven at the highest level.

Tottenham must avoid Antoine Semenyo transfer

Frank has shown interest in bringing Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo to Spurs.

However, as reported by David Ornstein via The Athletic (20 June), the Cherries want £70million for their star forward.

Tottenham might have that figure in their budget if Frank is that keen to sign Semenyo. However, the Spurs boss would be well advised to spend it more wisely.

Semenyo has played a big role in helping Bournemouth finish mid-table in the last couple of seasons, but there’s no proof that he can turn it on at the highest level.

For £70m, you’d want a player who has already featured in the Champions League, and some might question whether Semenyo is any better than the wingers Tottenham already have.

Tottenham can sign better players than Semenyo for less money

Frank has also been tracking Bryan Mbeumo, who is reportedly available for around £62.5m.

That’s a lower fee for a winger who scored more goals than Semenyo last season and has already thrived under Frank.

Jack Grealish is another player being eyed by Spurs. The Englishman has been frozen out by Manchester City in recent times, but he has performed at the highest level for England and in the Champions League. He’d likely be available for a similar fee.

Frank might have a lot of money to spend, but he shouldn’t be roped into spending it foolishly.

Tottenham may have finished 17th last season, but they have a great infrastructure and can offer their new signings Champions League football. Also, there’s plenty of time left to find suitable targets in this summer’s transfer window.

There’s no need to throw crazy money on unproven mid-table players like Semenyo.
