Tottenham can rescue Kobbie Mainoo from Man United nightmare and solve key problem
Tottenham are desperate for another midfielder in the final week of the transfer window, and Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo could be a shock option.
Long-term injuries to James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski have meant that Tottenham are desperate for a creative midfielder.
Spurs suffered rejections from Eberechi Eze and from Como for Nico Paz, and they are running out of attacking midfielders they can target.
While Mainoo may not necessarily be a natural number 10, signing him from Man United would be a major coup for Daniel Levy, and it now appears to be a possibility.

Kobbie Mainoo could leave Man United
Mainoo was United’s biggest talent just a year ago, and scored in a victorious FA Cup final in 2024, but a year later, his situation has changed.
Ruben Amorim is seemingly not a fan of the midfielder, and he left him out of the starting lineup as Tottenham beat United in the Europa League final.
Competition | Appearances | Starts | Direct Goal Involvements | Minutes Played |
Premier League | 29 | 25 | – | 1,666′ |
Europa League | 8 | 1 | 3 | 175′ |
Domestic Cups | 3 | 2 | – | 179′ |
Now, it has been reported by The Athletic that Mainoo is open to leaving Man United, with Amorim open to letting him go, as a result of his lack of game time under the under-pressure head coach.
Many Man United fans would be furious to see such a talented academy graduate leave, but Tottenham could take full advantage of this unexpected situation and poach him from Old Trafford.

Tottenham can build long-term midfield with Kobbie Mainoo
It remains to be seen whether United would sell within the Premier League, but if Tottenham have the opportunity to sign Mainoo, they should take it.
He can contribute in the final third, and while Maddison is absent, Mainoo can start as an advanced midfielder.
Joao Palhinha joined on loan, and in the long-term, when he eventually departs, Mainoo can even drop back to play in a pivot, and he could build Tottenham’s midfield for the future.
Pape Matar Sarr and Lucas Bergvall can also play alongside Mainoo, and this could become a formidable midfield trio for the foreseeable future if Spurs can snatch this missing piece from United.
Mainoo is already an England international, and it would be a huge statement of intent from Levy if he pushes the boat out to recruit him this summer.
