Pochettino return: ‘Absurd’ intel emerges on potential Tottenham deal

Mauricio Pochettino continues to be linked with a return to Tottenham as pressure mounts on Ange Postecoglou.

The former Spurs boss is currently managing the United States national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup but has admitted that he would like to return to North London in the future.

Given the intense scrutiny on the current incumbent with the Lilywhites season riding on their Europa League campaign, a return for the Argentine seemed like a genuine possibility.

However, a new update has poured cold water on that speculation.

Pochettino compensation fee would put Tottenham off a return

Pochettinho is a beloved figure at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after he took the club to the Champions League final in the 2018/19 season.

While his side ultimately lost to Liverpool, the 53-year-old is still very much loved in North London, including from owner Daniel Levy.

However, a report from BBC Sport on 24 March claims that it would take one of the largest compensation fees in the history of football to prise the Argentine away from his current role.

It states that despite his contract being a two-year £4.6million deal, it would take an amount close to the £21m that Chelsea paid Brighton for Graham Potter.

Tottenham to look elsewhere with crazy compensation for Pochettino

It makes no sense for Spurs to pay such a huge compensation fee, especially when other targets would not command such a figure.

The likes of Andoni Iraola or Marco Silva, who are high on Spurs’ list to replace Postecoglou if he is sacked would be much cheaper and therefore make more sense.

The former is the most appealing as he has worked miracles at Bournemouth but it remains to be seen whether he could do the same in N17.

Silva has had mixed stints in the Premier League at Watford, Everton and Fulham and although he has his current side in a good position, his spell on Merseyside in particular would cause concern.

While a return for Pochettino would bring back the feelgood factor, it is not the same Lilywhites side that he left behind and it would take a significant rebuild to get back to the levels that he took the club to.
