‘Mathys Tel already considering Tottenham departure’ after transfer development

Mathys Tel might already be feeling unsettled at Tottenham just weeks after his permanent arrival.

Tottenham announced the signing of Tel from Bayern Munich for a reported £30million fee on Sunday, 15 June, after the Frenchman spent the second half of last season on loan with the Lilywhites.

Tel netted three goals and provided two assists during his time in North London and was considered a talent too good to miss out on.

However, the 20-year-old is likely to already be feeling frustrated after a fresh transfer development.

Tottenham interested in Marcus Rashford after pay cut admission

Tottenham are one of the names to watch in the race to sign Marcus Rashford this summer [CaughtOffside].

Rashford’s £325,000 weekly wage could be a difficult hurdle for Spurs to overcome. However, it has been suggested that the 27-year-old would be willing to accept a pay cut to leave Manchester United.

This comes just after Tel signed a permanent contract at Tottenham. There is reason to believe that the youngster would have assumed a bigger role if Son Heung-min had departed this summer.

But the interest in Rashford suggests that Tottenham do not fully trust Tel to take on the responsibility. While the Frenchman is a dynamic attacker, his profile is similar to Rashford’s in several aspects.

Both players are comfortable playing as a centre-forward, but better enjoy cutting in from the left wing into goalscoring positions. One of the reasons why Tel’s output was not as high under Ange Postecoglou was the insistence on keeping him glued to the touchline.

The Spurs forward will have more freedom to cut inside under Thomas Frank. However, Tel could seriously reconsider his Tottenham future if Rashford arrives.

Tottenham should be sure before signing Rashford

There was once a time when Rashford was expected to become one of the best players in Europe. But a couple of inconsistent managers, an unstable environment at United and a loan to Aston Villa later, and the Englishman is still searching for his best form.

Rashford could be unlocked with the right manager and system. However, Tottenham must be certain that Frank is best placed to do this. If not, signing Rashford could do more harm than good, and it would take some time to financially recover.

Therefore, while the best version of Rashford is one of the strongest players in the world, Tottenham need to be certain they can bring that side out of the player before committing to his transfer.
