Johan Lange told Tottenham promise means nothing as Thomas Frank to pay the price

Tottenham fans aren’t happy with how the winter transfer window has gone.

Tottenham signed six players in the transfer market, but Conor Gallagher is the only senior player who is good enough to walk straight into the starting lineup.

Thomas Frank is under intense scrutiny as Spurs have been eliminated from both domestic cup competitions and sit 14th in the Premier League.

Given the team’s poor position in the table, supporters would have been hoping for much better recruitment, as this season looks to be going to waste.

Sporting director Johan Lange spoke in an interview about Tottenham’s recruitment, and Gabby Agbonlahor believes that more investment was definitely needed.

Spurs had a net spend of £13m, which clearly isn’t enough for where the team currently is.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 5 February, Agbonlahor believes that the bulk of the money had to be spent in January to ensure Spurs were in the best place to secure Champions League football.

He said: “When you hear Johan Lange, he promised that there is money available for the summer.

“But the problem is, where will Spurs finish if they miss out on the Champions League? Will good players want to join without Champions League football?

“It’s ok having money, but it’s no use if you can’t attract any players.”

Having sold Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace, who was last season’s top scorer in all competitions, Tottenham certainly didn’t have a successful window as they failed to replace him, and Frank will ultimately be the one to pay the price.

If Spurs don’t qualify for the Champions League, Frank will surely be sacked, and it will hurt Tottenham’s ability to convince top-class players to join in the summer.

Therefore, Lange’s words of hope for spending in the summer will ultimately mean nothing.

Do Tottenham have any chance of qualifying for the Champions League?

In all honesty, Spurs’ hopes of a top-five finish look very slim.

England are expected to earn five Champions League places this season, but Spurs have a huge gap to make up.

Tottenham are currently 11 points behind fifth-placed Chelsea, and they have just 14 games to achieve something remarkable.

When you factor in the fact that Liverpool are also in the mix, it would seem implausible for several teams in the Champions League race to drop enough points needed.

Spurs can get off to a good start by beating Man United at Old Trafford on Sunday, but a lot would still need to go their way.

The only other scenario that could see them play in next year’s Champions League is by winning this season’s edition, which looks very unlikely.

Lange has made a catastrophic error by not spending more money before the deadline on 2 February, and it will probably come back to bite him.
