Cristian Romero given perfect way to seal Tottenham exit after Champions League draw

Cristian Romero has been exploring Tottenham exit options for some time and he can now all but seal a move away.

Romero has had a turbulent season to say the least, picking up two red cards so far and regularly criticising the board on social media.

The Spurs captain still retains the support of much of the fanbase, but there is a growing feeling that he is a liability.

He is still one of the best defenders in the world on his day though, and will surely be seeking a move away from Tottenham at the end of this season, as he did last summer.

Tottenham meet Atletico Madrid in Champions League

Despite sitting 16th in the Premier League table, only four points clear of the relegation zone, Spurs have actually had a decent campaign in Europe.

Admittedly, they did have a favourable set of fixtures in the group phase of the Champions League, but they still managed to secure a fourth-place finish and immediate progression to the last 16.

Following the conclusion of the play-off games, the draw for the next round of the competition was completed on Friday morning, with Tottenham handed a two-legged tie against Atletico Madrid.

Diego Simeone’s side beat Club Brugge 7-4 on aggregate in the play-off round to progress through to the last 16.

Igor Tudor’s side will travel to the Metropolitano Stadium on 10 March for the first leg, before Atleti then make the trip to North London a week later for the return fixture.

Cristian Romero set for Atletico Madrid audition

Romero was heavily linked with Atletico Madrid last summer, with rumours that he explored a move away from Tottenham.

However, the Argentine eventually signed a new contract in North London, but the talk of a switch to the Spanish capital has not died down.

Atleti are expected to make a significant financial effort to sign Romero next summer, and the upcoming Champions League last 16 tie provides them with the perfect opportunity to check out their potential addition.

Romero will be desperate to perform well across the two legs in order to convince Simeone and Co. that he is the right defender for them.
