Xabi Alonso is now in contention to replace Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham.

The Bayer Leverkusen manager is one of the most sought-after appointments in world football after his success in the Bundesliga and Europe last season.

Postecoglou is still under immense pressure at Tottenham but does currently have the backing of Daniel Levy despite being the favourite for the sack next in the Premier League.

This is where Alonso comes in, and the Spaniard has rapidly become second favourite for the role.

Bet Victor has the Leverkusen chief at 8-1 odds for the role, with Edin Terzic widely regarded as the favourite currently at Paddy Power and Betfair at 9-2.

Xabi Alonso set for Tottenham job

This would be a huge appointment.

Liverpool and Real Madrid have both already been linked heavily with their club legend, but could another step to Tottenham benefit Alonso as his next step?

Conquering Germany with Leverkusen, picking up all available domestic silverware in an unbeaten season and only losing in the final of the Europa League was huge.

England is different though, and Alonso will know that from his time at Anfield.

Despite the exciting links though, it is time to back Postecoglou.

The Australian has done great work with both arms tied behind his backs with aggressive injury issues and constant outside pressure from the media and others.

If and when the time comes, Alonso is a great option, but Daniel Levy appears content as things stand.
