Will Still emerges as contender for Tottenham job as exit news confirmed

Tottenham are already sounding out candidates to replace Ange Postecoglou at the end of the season.

Postecoglou is not expected to see out the remaining year on his contract with Daniel Levy already seeking his fifth permanent appointment in six years.

The writing has been on the wall for a while with Tottenham just one spot above the Premier League’s bottom three following a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park on Friday (16 May).

Postecoglou still retains the backing of the squad and has a chance to end Spurs’ 17-year wait for a major trophy by winning the UEFA Europa League, but neither factor may carry enough weight to influence Levy’s stance.

Will Still new name on Spurs’ list

Tottenham, along with a host of other Premier League clubs, will no doubt have been alerted to Still’s availability after it was announced that the 32-year-old will be leaving Lens this summer.

Still wishes to return to England for personal reasons, particularly to be closer to his partner Emma Saunders, who has been suffering from illness.

Despite his young age, the Belgium-born manager has built a reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting prospects, guiding Lens to 8th in Ligue 1 this season.

Among the clubs that have followed his progress are Tottenham, who the bookmakers have already touted as a potential destination for Still, with odds of 14/1 on Paddy Power.

They would have to stave off interest from Southampton, who are currently favourites to secure Still’s services following their relegation from the top flight.

Levy can’t afford an indecisive summer

Tottenham fans will have grim memories of Levy’s protracted managerial searches, which ended with the club resigning to a third or fifth or eighth choice.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s appointment in 2021 comes to mind, and with Fabio Paratici possibly influencing proceedings again, there is a fear that Spurs could spend a whole summer in limbo.

Players’ futures, including club captain Son Heung-min, will also hinge on the final decision on the manager, placing more pressure on Levy to be decisive and act swiftly before the top candidates become unattainable.
