Wayne Rooney calls out Postecoglou after what he did for Tottenham v Fulham

Tottenham suffered a 2-0 defeat to Fulham on Sunday afternoon, with Ange Postecoglou facing questions already.

Fulham sealed their victory at Craven Cottage with goals from Rodrigo Muniz and ex-Tottenham man Ryan Sessegnon.

Spurs have now suffered 15 Premier League defeats this term, while Postecoglou is already under increasing scrutiny.

Tottenham have not managed a win in the top flight since their 4-1 victory over relegation-threatened Ipswich on 22 February.

Wayne Rooney criticises Postecoglou for his team selection v Fulham

Former England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has already hit back at Postecoglou for his team selection in Tottenham’s trip to Fulham.

James Maddison and Son Heung-Min were accompanied on the bench by key defenders Micky Van de Ven and Pedro Porro.

Match Of The Day 2 host Jason Mohammad asked Wayne Rooney [16 March]: “Why hasn’t he (Postecoglou) picked his strongest side?”

Rooney was baffled, saying: “No idea.

“In my opinion, he has to pick his best team, his best 11 he’s got available.

“I think his team selection today was wrong, I think he should have played his best starting 11 to give themselves a better chance of winning the game and he didn’t, and that’s cost them.”

Postecoglou’s Spurs team selection v Fulham was wrong

Rooney was right to criticise Postecoglou for his team selection against Fulham, as he cannot afford to keep swapping his team and resting players when losing so many games.

The fact that both Son and Maddison were left on the substitutes’ bench meant that Tottenham were not able to threaten Fulham for large spells of the game, while they mustered just four shots on target.

Perhaps Postecoglou’s rationale behind choosing to leave some of his star players on the bench was because Spurs had only faced AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League just three days before their trip to Fulham, while they have already encountered several injuries this term.

But Tottenham are not in action again until 3 April when they face rivals Chelsea, courtesy of the international break, so Postecoglou should have chosen his strongest possible line-up.

Spurs reinstalled a feeling of positivity around the club when they advanced to the Europa League quarter-finals via their win over Alkmaar, but they failed to follow that up with another win over Fulham, largely because of their team selection.
