View: Ange Postecoglou can win Spurs fans over like he did at Celtic as three-year contract on cards

It is said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting the same results, step forward Tottenham.

Appoint a high-profile manager, fail to land the sort of talent capable of bridging the gap to the Premier League’s elite clubs, tension ensues, high-profile manager departs.

Rinse and repeat.

Since abandoning the Mauricio Pochettino project at the first sign of trouble back in 2019, Spurs have been ramshackle in terms of their approach.

Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, the serial winners who could not win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (albeit the former was contentiously sacked before an EFL Cup final) departed with damage to their reputations.

Which is why the indifferent view taken by supporters towards the imminent appointment of Ange Postecoglou feels a little bizarre. Arrogance maybe? Or ignorance?

It’s deja vu all over again.

Fabrizio Romano reported on Monday (5 June) that the amiable Aussie has agreed to a two-year contract with Tottenham, with the option to extend that deal by a further 12 months.

The response on social media has been a little mixed. Some accept that Spurs’ approach since the sacking of Pochettino hasn’t worked, while others are steadfast in their belief that Postecoglou’s lack of experience in major European leagues will count against him.

Sound familiar? Well, that’s because a similar response welcomed Postecoglou’s arrival at Celtic Park.

League titles in Australia and Japan and an Asian Cup triumph with the Socceroos were deemed achievements somehow not quite worthy for Scottish football.

Two years later, with five trophies to his name (including a famous treble this season) and an exciting brand of football that almost yielded 100 points and Postecoglou has won over that doubting fanbase.

Now, that same underlying scepticism about his achievements in Scotland underpins the perceived general feel about Spurs fans’ view of his appointment.

It’s time for Postecoglou to win over the doubters all over again in north London. He might just do that.
